Adjectives And Adverbs

- Adjectives (example.nice) are used to describe nouns (ex.boy)
Ex. The boy is nice.

- Adverbs (ex.loudly) are used to describe verbs (ex.speaks) , adjectives or other adverbs
Ex.The teacher speaks loudly.

Examples of Adjectives and Adverbs :
- The girl is beautiful. (adjective)
The girl sings beautifully. (adverb)

- The room is warm. (adjective)
The boy smiles warmly. (adverb)

- The car is slow. (adjective)
Fatima drives slowly. (adverb)


How to change adjectives to adverbs ?

- Most of the words we add ly
Ex.Nice --> Nicely

- Some words that ends with y (ex.heavy) , we change the y to i and add ly
Ex. Heavy--> Heavily

(إستثناءات) Some words are exceptions
Ex.Good --> Well

Count nouns are things we can count
Ex.:
pen-->pens
book-->books
wall-->walls

Non-count nouns are the things that we cannot count
Ex.: tea, sugar, water, air, rice , knowledge, beauty, anger, fear, love..


Correct : Can you give me some water?
Incorrect : Can you give me some waters ? X

Correct: They've got a lot of knowledge.
Incorrect: They've got a lot of knowledeges . X

Comparatives and Superlatives of Adjectives


- Comparatives and Superlatives are special forms of adjectives. They are used to compare two or more things



1- One-syllable adjectives
( الكلمة تتكون من مقطع واحد )

Comparative Form :One syllable adjective (ex.tall) + er

Superlative forms : One-syllable adjective (ex.tall) + est

One-Syllable Adjective>>Comparative Form>>Superlative Form
tall>> taller >> tallest
old >> older >> oldest
long >> longer >> longest
Wise >> wiser >> wisest

Examples :
* Fatima is taller than Mona.
* Fatima is the tallest of all the students.



-If the adjective ends with a single consonant (ex. g,n,t,...) with a vowel (ex.i,e,a,o,u) before it, double the consonant and add –er for the comparative form; and double the consonant and add –est for the superlative form.

Words end with vowel and consonant>> Comparative form >> Superlative Form
big >> bigger >> biggest
thin >> thinner >> thinnest
fat >> fatter >> fattest

Examples :

* My dog is bigger than your dog.
* My dog is the biggest of all the dogs in the neighborhood.




2-Two-syllable adjectives.

- Comparative Form : more + two-syllable adjectives (ex.peaceful)
- Superlative Form : most + two-syllable adjectives (ex.peaceful).
Two-Syllable Adjective >> Comparative Form >> Superlative Form
peaceful >>more peaceful >> most peaceful
pleasant >>more pleasant >> most pleasant
careful >> more careful >> most careful
thoughtful >>more thoughtful >> most thoughtful
happy>>happier>> happiest
Examples:

* This morning is more peaceful than yesterday morning.
* Mona's house in the mountains is the most peaceful in the world.
* Ahmad is happier today than he was yesterday.
* Ahmad is the happiest boy in the world.

-Two-syllable adjectives ending in –er, -le, or –ow take –er and –est to form the comparative and superlative forms.

Two-Syllable Adjective Ending with -er, -le, or -ow >> Comparative Form >>Superlative Form
narrow >> narrower >> narrowest
gentle >> gentler >> gentlest

Examples :

* The roads in this town are narrower than the roads in the city.
* This road is the narrowest of all the roads in California.




3-Adjectives with three or more syllables.

For adjectives with three syllables or more, you form the comparative with more and the superlative with most.
Adjective with Three or More Syllables >> Comparative Form >> Superlative Form
generous >> more generous >> most generous
important >> more important >> most important
intelligent >> more intelligent >> most intelligent

Examples:

* Ahmad is more generous than Khalid.
* Ahmad is the most generous of all the people I know.




4-Exceptions:

Irregular adjectives.

Irregular Adjective >> Comparative Form >> Superlative Form
good >> better >> best
bad >> worse >> worst
far >> farther >> farthest
little >> less >> least
many >> more >> most

* Italian food is better than American food.
* My dog is the best dog in the world.
